The Salmon Wild and Scenic River defines the northern boundary of this high-elevation wilderness within the Salmon National Forest. The landscape is dominated by the steep rises of the Salmon River Mountains, where Napoleon Hill and Napoleon Ridge oversee a complex network of drainages and gulches. An extensive system of historical trails and forest roads, including the Little Moose Creek Trl and Diamond Gulch Trl, suggests a legacy of backcountry access through the Jackass Ridge area.
