Phelps Lake dominates the northern horizon of this coastal plain landscape, where the southern shoreline transitions into an expansive network of wetlands. The area is defined by its low-lying topography and a systematic grid of drainage channels that crisscross the terrain south of Shore Dr. This 2016 survey illustrates a sparsely populated region primarily characterized by the intersection of county lines, including the junction of Washington County and Hyde County and the boundary shared with Tyrrell County. Apart from the perimeter road near the lake and State Rd 1140, the landscape is largely undeveloped, reflecting the preserved and natural state of these inner coastal wetlands.
