Lake Mattamuskeet and the surrounding coastal wetlands define this Hyde County landscape, which is marked by an extensive network of drainage and transport waterways. At the northern edge, New Lake feeds into the New Lake Fork, eventually meeting the Alligator River. This area is intersected by major engineering projects designed to manage the low-lying terrain, most notably the Pungo River-Alligator River Canal which cuts across the central portion of the map.
