The northern reaches of Lake Mattamuskeet dominate the southern portion of this landscape, where the shoreline meets low-lying coastal plains defined by an extensive network of drainage and transport waterways. The Pungo River-Alligator River Canal cuts a straight line across the center of the terrain, serving as a critical hydraulic link between the Alligator River and the Pungo River systems. This area is characterized by organized land divisions and water management, seen in the paths of the Swindells Canal and Florida Canal.
