Sumter National Forest lands dominate this part of the South Carolina Piedmont, where the boundary between Laurens Co and Newberry Co cuts diagonally across a landscape of creeks and historical crossroads. Small rural communities like Stomp Springs, Brickhouse Crossroads, and Cromer Crossroads anchor the road network, which includes the Whitmire Hwy and several family-named routes such as Jack Wilson Rd and McCrackin Rd.

Genealogists will find several burial sites preserved among the timbered tracts and rolling terrain, including Mt Tabor Cem, Flinthill Cem, and Fairview Cem. The area is deeply dissected by a dense drainage system, including Headleys Cr, Pattersons Cr, and the larger Indian Cr. These watercourses helped define the boundaries of early land grants and the locations of the scattered settlements shown here.
