The rail and road corridor of southeastern Georgia is clearly defined in this study of Charlton County, where the diagonal path of Us-1 and the north-south route of Us-301 converge toward Homeland. The landscape is dominated by the low-lying wetlands of Trail Ridge, characterized by numerous named "islands" such as Sandy Island, Clay Island, and Sweet Gum Island that rise slightly above the surrounding terrain. Small settlements and railroad stops like Cypress Siding, Mattox, and Uptonville trace the transportation network that historically drove the local economy.
