Newfound Lake dominates the eastern half of this landscape, its deep waters reaching into Hebron Bay and Sanborn Bay. The settlement of Hebron sits at the northern head of the lake, where the Cockermouth River enters the basin. This area is characterized by significant public conservation lands, including the high elevations of Crosby Mountain State Park and the rugged shoreline at Wellington Beach State Park.

Further west, the terrain rises toward Fletcher Mountain and Oregon Mountain, cut by numerous watercourses like Hardy Brook and Chesley Brook. Local history is marked by a series of Cem sites and industrial markers such as Sandpits along the Fowler River. Of particular interest is the Sculptured Rocks State Geologic Site along the river, representing a unique natural landmark in the town of Groton.
