About this map

Ouachita National Forest dominates this landscape in Polk County, where the settlement of Shady sits near the western boundary. The terrain is defined by a dense network of mountain ridges and gaps, including the prominent Nichols Mountain and the high points of Tall Peak and Buckeye Mtn. This area serves as a significant headwater region for several regional waterways. The Cossatot River and Little Missouri River both originate or pass through these highlands, while the Saline River and its N Fork Saline River emerge to the south. The complex topography is further marked by named passes such as Wolf Pen Gap and Sugartree Gap, which have historically facilitated movement through the Missouri Mountains and the Hanna Range. Numerous forest roads, such as Polk Road 612 and Heath Valley Rd, provide access to these peaks and valleys.
