The Penobscot River flows through the southern corner of this Penobscot County landscape, defining a network of riverine features including Mattanawcook Island, Nelson Island, and Little Island. Away from the river, the terrain is characterized by a series of distinct north-south glacial features and ridges, most notably Nine Meadow Ridge, Adley Ridge, and Pea Ridge. Large wetland complexes such as Eighteen Bog, Keene Bog, and the colorfully named Stinking Bog occupy the lowlands between these elevations, fed by a dense web of waterways including Medunkeunk Stream and Trout Brook.
