The boundary between Koochiching and Itasca counties bisects this northern Minnesota landscape, where the Chippewa National Forest covers much of the southern terrain. The small village of Northome sits at the northern edge, serving as a local hub near Cameron Lake and Forest Hill Cem. To the south, the settlement of Bergville and the nearby Bergville Cem are positioned between Bergville Lake and the larger Island Lake.

Hydrological features dominate the area, with the Cormorant River and Popple River winding through a complex network of wetlands and smaller water bodies like Nesseth Lake and Shallow Pond Lake. Farther west, the hamlet of Orth and Oakum Cem indicate the localized nature of early twentieth-century settlement patterns.
