The Virginia and North Carolina state line bisects this landscape, separating Henry and Rockingham counties. The Smith River dominates the eastern half of the terrain, carving a distinctive loop known as The Bend as it flows toward the industrial and residential hub of Eden. To the north, the Virginia side is defined by elevated landforms like Drag Mtn and the upper reaches of Turkeycock Creek.

Residential developments and traditional settlements cluster along the main road corridors, with Ridgeway and Fairview serving as key local centers. Genealogists can identify several significant burial grounds, including Overlook Cem and Woodlawn Cem near the river, as well as Mountain View Cem further west. Smaller communities like Shannon Hills and Sheffield Hill occupy the northwestern corner, where the topography is broken by numerous small tributaries such as Marrowbone Creek and Reds Creek.
