The Purgatoire River meanders through a labyrinth of deep sandstone breaks and drainages in this corner of Las Animas County. The landscape is defined by its dramatic topographic relief, where the prominent O V Mesa rises above a series of named side-canyons including Welsh Canyon, Red Rock Canyon, and Bruno Canyon. Much of the eastern and central portion of the map is managed as the Comanche National Grassland, highlighting the transition from open plains to the complex river corridor.
