The Purgatoire River carves a deep path through the southern Colorado plains in this modern survey of the Comanche National Grassland. The landscape is dominated by the massive O V Mesa and a complex system of drainage canyons, including Purgatoire Canyon and the smaller Welsh Canyon. This area reflects the modern tension between conservation and military readiness, as a significant portion of the northern terrain falls within the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site.
