Couchton and the surrounding Aiken County countryside are defined by a complex network of waterways feeding the S Fork Edisto River. The landscape reveals a legacy of rural industry and community, particularly through the presence of Johnson Millpond and Tarrants Millpond along the southern drainage of Upper Three Runs. These water-powered sites, common in the South Carolina coastal plain, were historically central to local timber and milling operations.
