The Gila River corridor winds through the southern edge of this desert landscape, where historical traces of the mid-19th century overland trails are still marked. The most poignant site is the Oatman Grave located near Oatman Flat, a landmark associated with the 1851 tragedy of the Oatman family during their westward journey. Nearby, the Fourr Cem indicates later settlement efforts in this arid environment. The terrain is dominated by the volcanic mass of Oatman Mtn to the east and the broad, dry expanse of Hyder Valley to the west. A network of desert tracks, including Rocky Point Rd and W Government Rd, connects scattered locales like Montezuma and Papago, following the natural drainage of Copper Wash as it descends toward the river basin.
