Glacial topography and a high density of small lakes define this portion of Polk County, where the Hill River meanders through a landscape heavily altered by early 20th-century water management. Numerous named basins, such as Syverson Lake, Agnes Lake, and Sawmill Lake, are interspersed with an extensive network of drainage projects including County Ditch Number Fiftynine and County Ditch Number One Hundred Thirteen. These ditches illustrate the historical effort to manage the region's wetlands for agriculture.
