Lassen National Forest terrain dominates this 2015 study of the southern Cascades, where the historic Lassen Trail winds through high-elevation ridges. The landscape is defined by the deep drainage of Deer Creek, which features both Deer Creek Falls and Lower Deer Creek Falls as it cuts westward. Prominent peaks such as Onion Butte and Colby Mtn provide significant vertical relief, with the Colby Mtn Lookout positioned to monitor the surrounding timberlands. Numerous forest service routes, including the Colby Loop and Colby Creek Tie, illustrate the modern infrastructure used for fire management and backcountry access. Along the northern edge, Mill Cr and its tributaries like Forked Cr transition toward Round Valley, showing the complex network of cold-water streams that feed the region's larger river systems.
