The W Little Owyhee River snakes through the high desert of Malheur County, cutting deep relief into the landscape at Louse Canyon and Massey Canyon. This topography is dominated by prominent volcanic rises and ridges, including the landmark Oregon Butte in the southwest and Mahogany Butte to the southeast. The drainage patterns of Toppin Cr, Tent Cr, and Jack Cr converge toward the river system, which served as a critical water source for the region's ranching interests.
