Evidence of the area's diverse cultural history is visible in the Abandoned Indian Village near Cape Alava and the Swedish Memorial Jan 1903 on the southern coast.

Transportation through this dense landscape relied on early logging infrastructure and a few significant crossings like the Big River Steel Bridge.
