Shark River Slough dominates this expanse of The Everglades, where the landscape is defined by subtle variations in elevation and hydrology. Small tree islands or "hammocks" emerge from the sawgrass marsh, serving as critical landmarks in an otherwise fluid environment. This 2024 survey captures the preserved character of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness, showing the distribution of these named hammocks such as Pot Hammock, Guava Hammock, and the isolated Panther Mound.
