Grass Valley and the high plateaus of Piute County define this corner of the Fishlake National Forest. The landscape is dominated by the north-south drainage of Otter Creek, which passes through a constricted passage known as The Narrows. To the east, the terrain rises sharply toward the Awapa Plateau and the prominent heights of Parker Mtn and Parker Knoll.

Evidence of historical land use and early travel routes is preserved in the road network, including Old Hwy 62 and Otter Creek Flat Rd. Numerous canyons, such as Rock Canyon and Pole Canyon, cut through the western ridges, providing natural access points into the high country. Small, seasonal water bodies like Dog Lake and Mud Lake dot the eastern uplands, reflecting the varied hydrology of this high-elevation basin.
