The Illinois River cuts a deep path through the eastern half of this terrain, where the rugged topography of the Siskiyou National Forest is defined by a network of steep gulches and high summits. This 2017 survey captures the remote character of the boundary between Curry and Josephine counties, anchored by the prominent Pearsoll Peak. Settlement patterns are sparse and tied to the river's course and accessible flats, such as Oak Flat and Miami Bar in the north, and Horse Flat further south.
