Sky Lakes Wilderness defines the high-altitude landscape of this 2023 survey, where the borders of the Winema National Forest and Rogue River National Forest meet. The terrain is characterized by a dense concentration of small alpine lakes and significant peaks, including the prominent Pelican Butte and Imagination Peak. A sophisticated network of trails, most notably the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trl, provides the primary access through these protected lands. The naming conventions of the water bodies, such as Lake No-Se-Um, Wizzard Lake, and the Heavenly Twin Lakes, reflect a history of backcountry exploration. In the central part of the quadrangle, Big Meadows offers a rare break in the timber, served by the Big Meadow Trl and the logging-adjacent Coldsprings Road. This map is a record of a modern wilderness preserve managed across multiple agency jurisdictions.
