Bogue Sound separates the mainland of Carteret County from the barrier island of Bogue Banks in this mid-century coastal survey. On the mainland, the Atlantic and East Carolina railroad tracks run parallel to the coast, serving small communities like Wildwood and Mansfield. The landscape north of the tracks is characterized by the dense wetlands of Hull Swamp and the southern edge of the Croatan National Forest, while the shoreline is dotted with local landmarks including St Marks Chapel and the Morehead City Airport.

Across the water, the thin strip of the banks is largely defined by the maritime forest of Hoop Pole Woods and the isolated Willis Landing. This era shows the area before intensive coastal development, with much of the island remaining in a natural state between the sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Aviation and maritime history are both present, with the Intracoastal Waterway navigating past Camp Morehead and Peltier Creek.
