The Appalachian National Scenic Trail traverses the western reaches of this North Woods landscape, winding past the high ground of Potaywadjo Ridge. This area is defined by a complex network of interconnected waterways, centered on the expansive Pemadumcook Lake and Ambejejus Lake. These large bodies of water are part of the West Branch Penobscot River system, which features natural bottlenecks and drops such as Passamagamet Falls and Ambejejus Falls.

The presence of numerous islands, including Moose Island and White Horse Island, alongside smaller basins like Middle Jo-Mary Lake and Turkey Tail Lake, reflects a classic glacial topography. To the south and east, the terrain rises into prominent landforms like Lincoln Ridge and North Twin Ridge, which hem in the northern finger of South Twin Lake.
