Lolo National Forest covers much of this high-elevation landscape along the border of Sanders and Mineral Counties. Defined by the Coeur d'Alene Mountains, the area is anchored by prominent summits like Penrose Peak and Cherry Peak. The topography is etched by a complex drainage system including Cherry Creek and Flat Rock Creek, which carve through features with evocative local names such as Happy Hollow and Cedar Tangle. The presence of Acorn Lake near Eddy Creek provides a rare point of still water amidst the steep ridgelines.
