Lake Michigan dominates the western edge of this coastal survey, where the shoreline is defined by intricate inland water systems and dunes. The village of Pentwater sits at the narrow channel connecting Pentwater Lake to the open lake, a classic example of a West Michigan harbor town. To the north, French Town and Meisenheimer Corners mark smaller hubs of activity near Bass Lake and the winding Kibby Cr. The landscape transitions from these coastal settlements into the protected timberlands of the Manistee National Forest in the east.
