About this map

The rugged shoreline of Southeast Alaska is documented here during the late 1940s, a period prior to extensive modern development within the Tongass National Forest. The geography is defined by the narrow passage of Zimovia Strait, which separates Wrangell Island from the neighboring Etolin Island. Evidence of early settlement is sparse, marked primarily by isolated Cabins situated along protected waterways like Whaletail Cove and the northern reaches of the strait. High peaks such as Mt Etolin and Mt Shakes dominate the interior landscape, while the coastal waters are dotted with numerous landmarks including the Zimovia Islets and Village Islands. The map illustrates a complex network of channels and inlets, from the wide Ernest Sound to the secluded Thoms Place, reflecting a wilderness where travel was almost exclusively maritime and focused on the intricate island-and-strait system.
