The settlement of Piedmont sits at the edge of the limestone front range, where the plains meet the timbered slopes of the Black Hills National Forest. This 2017 survey shows the interface between the growing town and the rugged canyon country to its west, including Chimney Canyon and the winding course of Little Elk Cr. The landscape is defined by its recreation and transport networks, from the Paradise Valley Airport in the south to the extensive Centennial Trail system that traverses the hills.
