The settlement of Tampico sits at the junction of several drainage systems in the central part of this Yakima County landscape. The terrain is defined by prominent east-west ridges, including Pine Mtn and Cowiche Mtn, which overlook a network of seasonal and perennial waterways like S Fork Cowiche Cr and Nasty Cr. To the south, the deep incision of Bear Canyon and Carpenter Gulch cuts through the high ground leading toward Sedge Ridge and Ahtanum Ridge.
