The Stanislaus National Forest landscape near the crest of the Sierras is defined by a dense network of high-altitude meadows and drainages. Settlement centers around Pinecrest, positioned near the shore of Pinecrest Lake, and the small community of Bumblebee to the northwest. The terrain is marked by significant topographical variation, from the heights of Pinecrest Peak and Burst Rock to the deep cut of the S Fork Stanislaus River.
