Petrified Forest National Park and the Petrified Forest Wilderness occupy the northwestern corner of this landscape, where the arid high desert of Apache County meets significant cultural and natural landmarks. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad bisects the terrain, running parallel to the Puerco River and the course of Dead Wash. This transportation corridor was central to the small settlement of Pinta, which sits near a concentration of ancient sites, including a noted Indian Mound and several Petroglyphs. The map reveals a reliance on isolated water sources for ranching or travel, documented through numerous named features such as Sweetwater Well, Bar in Well, and Saddle Horse Tank. In the northern section, Interstate 40 provides the modern artery through the region, passing by a designated Rest Area and commercial extraction sites like a Gravel Pit and Borrow Pit.
