About this map

Point Lay serves as the primary coastal settlement on this survey of Alaska's northwestern edge, situated along the narrow barrier islands separating the Chukchi Sea from the protected waters of Kasegaluk Lagoon. The landscape is defined by its complex hydrography, where the Kokolik River and Utukok River wind across the tundra toward the coast. Farther south, the terrain rises into the Amatusuk Hills and Kiklupiklak Hills, providing a stark contrast to the low-lying coastal plains and the Beaufort Basin. Local history is preserved in the location of a Cem and isolated Cabin sites, along with small traditional locations such as Naokok and Omalik. Transport in this environment is restricted to a Trail and Winter Trail, reflecting the seasonal rhythms of the North Slope before significant modern infrastructure. This edition, prepared by the Army Map Service, captures the remote character of the Arctic Ocean shoreline near Cape Beaufort.
