St Martin Bay defines the southern edge of this Upper Peninsula landscape, where the shoreline of Lake Huron meets the dense woods of the Hiawatha National Forest. In the mid-1960s, the small community of Pontehartrain Shores sits along the coastal road, while the inland settlement of Simmons is marked by a scattering of clearings and the nearby Simmons Cem. The terrain is etched by numerous watercourses, including Silver Creek, Rock Spring Creek, and Nunns Creek, which flow toward the bay.
