Tongass National Forest blankets this portion of Baranof Island, where the coastline is defined by the deep inlets of Whale Bay and Great Arm. The interior is dominated by a complex network of freshwater bodies including Plotnikof Lake, Khvostof Lake, and Rezanof Lake, all situated among the high peaks of the Alexander Archipelago. To the south, the Maksoutof River drains into Maksoutof Lake before meeting the salt water at Sandy Bay.
