The Chippewa National Forest surrounds a vast aqueous network in Cass County, where the massive waters of Leech Lake and Lake Winnibigoshish dominate the landscape. This particular corner of the woods is defined by the portage routes and trails that navigate between smaller bodies of water, including Little Portage Lake and Portage Lake. The topography is relatively level, characterized by extensive wetlands and forest service infrastructure like Forest Rte 2148 and the Soo Line Atv Trl, the latter following the path of a former rail corridor.
