1971 Map of Potato Lakes

About this map

The John Long Mountains dominate this high-country landscape, where the headwaters of the East Fork Rock Creek and Middle Fork Rock Creek begin their descent. In the early 1970s, the region was defined by a complex water management system necessary for the lower valleys, featuring the Flint Creek Canal, an Aqueduct, and a Siphon to navigate the difficult terrain. At the southern end of the sheet, the East Fork Reservoir and its associated East Fork Campground represent the recreational and hydrologic utility of the Deerlodge National Forest. Small-scale extractive activity is evident from several Mines located near South Fork Antelope Creek, while the Philipsburg Valley begins to open in the east, marked by the Flint Creek Lateral Canal. This area is characterized by a dense network of primitive travel routes, indicated by numerous labels for Jeep Trails that connect high basins like the Potato Lakes.
