Marias River meanders across the southern portion of this landscape on the border of Liberty and Hill Counties, creating a deep canyon-like depression that contrasts with the surrounding high plains. Numerous erosion-formed drainages, locally termed coulees, cut through the terrain to feed the river and its tributaries. Wolfe Coulee and Hay Coulee dominate the south-central sections, while Cottonwood Cr winds through the western reaches. This area is defined by the Public Land Survey System grid, which is reflected in the rectilinear road network including Joplin Rd and 2000 Rd E. The map provides a detailed look at the geographic transition between the flat upland benches and the deeply incised river valley, documenting the natural drainage patterns of this northern Montana region.
