Fantastic Lava Beds and the Painted Dunes dominate the center of this high-elevation landscape, illustrating the geological activity surrounding the prominent Cinder Cone. This region is defined by its volcanic legacy, where the flows from the cone once dammed local drainages to create bodies of water like Snag Lake and Butte Lake. To the north, the terrain transitions into a dense network of forest service roads, such as 32n21 and 32n82y, which provide access to Butte Creek Campground and Butte Lake Campground.
