Fantastic Lava Beds dominate the central topography of this survey, spreading southward from the volcanic landmark of Cinder Cone. The landscape is a study in geothermal history, where the multi-colored Painted Dunes meet dark lava flows that dammed the drainage to form Snag Lake and Butte Lake. These features reside within the overlapping boundaries of Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Lassen Volcanic Wilderness, showing the rugged volcanic terrain that defined the northern reaches of the park in the late 20th century.
