1970 Map of Ptarmigan Mountain

About this map

Wapiti Ridge and the high summits of the Absaroka Range dominate this landscape within the Shoshone National Forest as it was documented in 1970. The topography is defined by significant elevations like Ptarmigan Mountain and Citadel Mtn, dropping into drainages carved by Ishawooa Creek and Bobcat Creek. Near the southern edge, the South Fork Shoshone River flows past the Ishawooa Hills, providing a lower-elevation corridor compared to the surrounding peaks. Access to this remote backcountry is traced through primitive routes such as the Ishawooa Trail and various stretches of Pack Trail. Much of the western and northern portion of the quadrangle falls within the Washakie Wilderness, where the map identifies alpine features like Hardpan Lake and seasonal flows from Icy Creek and Yellow Creek.
