Sierra Lucero dominates the central portion of this New Mexico landscape, serving as a prominent north-south ridge that defines the local geography. The area is marked by a series of high-altitude passes or "puertos," including Puerto de Bartolo Pino and Puerto de los Cavadores, which have historically facilitated movement through the steep terrain. These gaps in the ridgeline were essential for transit between the high mesas and the lower canyons, such as the Cañon de la Cienaga.
