The Ka'u Forest Reserve dominates this coastal landscape, where the volcanic slopes of Mauna Loa meet the Pacific. This 1995 revision, based on earlier surveys, captures a transition in land use from industrial agricultural activity to a quieter coastal presence. Evidence of former plantation life is visible at Middle Moa'ula Camp and Higashi Camp, marking locations of former worker communities.
