About this map

The volcanic landscape of the Kau District is defined here by successive historical events, most notably the Lava Flow of 1868, Lava Flow of 1887, and Lava Flow of 1907. These massive flows carve through the terrain, leaving behind islands of older vegetation known as kipukas, such as Kipuka Kepunoi and Kipuka Mamane. Amidst this active geology, the human footprint is visible in the Kiolakaa-Keaa Homesteads and the sprawling Kahuku Ranch. A Landing Strip and Rock Crusher suggest the mid-century infrastructure supporting this corner of the Island of Hawaii.
