About this map

The southern tip of Hawaii Island, surveyed in the early 1920s by Bishop Moorhead, reveals a landscape defined by volcanic activity and ancient cultural sites. The distinct boundary of the Lava Flow of 1887 dominates the western portion of the quadrangle, cutting across the Kau District toward the coast. Near the southernmost point at Kalae, sacred archaeology is preserved through labels like Ka Heiau o Kalalea and Ka Heiau o Molilele, while natural volcanic features such as Lua o Palahemo and Lua Makalei punctuate the coastal plain.
