Big Bottom defines the low-lying valley floor of the Cowlitz River in this mid-1990s record of the southern Washington Cascades. Most of the terrain is encompassed by the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, where a network of forest roads and trails provides access to high-elevation landmarks like Purcell Mtn, Cockscomb Mtn, and Pompey Peak. The river valley itself shows a more developed landscape, featuring the Cora Bridge and the small settlement at Kilborn. Local industry is evidenced by a Quarry and several borrow pits, while the presence of Little Paradise and a Trailer Park indicate the recreational and residential utility of the valley. Notable water features such as Willame Lake and the meandering Cunningham Creek illustrate the complex drainage systems that feed into the Cowlitz, carved through a landscape of ridges including Whalehead Ridge and Davis Mountain.
