About this map

Mauna Loa dominates this high-altitude volcanic landscape, where centuries of geologic activity are recorded in overlapping basalt sheets. The terrain is a chronological record of eruptions, including the Lava Flow of 1843, the Lava Flow of 1935, and the Lava Flow of 1881, which together illustrate the shifting paths of magma descending from the Northeast Rift Zone. These flows cut across specialized conservation lands, including the Kipuka Ainahou Nene Sanctuary and the Mauna Loa Game Reserve.
