Quemado anchors this high-desert landscape in western New Mexico, situated near the headwaters of the Rito Cr and Baca Arroyo. The settlement's history is preserved at the Quemado Community Cem just north of town, while the surrounding terrain is defined by the massive Mariano Mesa to the northeast. This portion of the Apache National Forest is characterized by a network of seasonal watercourses and drainage basins, including the Wilbur Wadley Draw and Sweazea Draw.
