Canyon de Chelly National Monument occupies the southern reaches of this landscape, where the deeply incised Canyon del Muerto meets a complex network of tributary drainages. The high desert terrain is defined by a series of prominent landforms including Red Cornfield Mesa, Many Coyote Mesa, and Wide Mesa, which rise above the surrounding canyons and washes. The drainage of Agua Sal Cr and Sheep Dip Cr provides the primary hydrological structure for the region, cutting through the sandstone layers. Movement across this intricate topography is facilitated by historical routes like the Middle Trail and Pine Tree Trail, which descend into Pine Tree Canyon and Middle Trail Canyon, alongside more modern infrastructure like Indian Rte 8076.
