Canyon de Chelly National Monument defines the southern portion of this landscape in Apache County, where the dramatic depths of Canyon del Muerto carve through the sandstone. The terrain is characterized by a series of high elevations and deep drainage systems, including Pine Tree Canyon and Middle Trail Canyon. Connectivity across this high desert environment is maintained by several tribal routes, most notably Indian Rte 64, which traverses the southern plateau.
